Gorham
School District:
Philosophy and goals
Philosophy
We believe that the community must recognize, support and provide
the opportunity, through its school system, to develop the widely
divergent skills and interests of its children.
We believe that all professional staff members must share with parents
the responsibility of providing for the students' physical, academic,
emotional and social needs and fostering the beliefs that one's
formal schooling is merely the beginning of one's quest for knowledge.
We believe that the Gorham School Board and all professional staff
members must be expected to create and must accept the responsibility
for the establishment of a school climate which stimulates the growth
of each individual.
We believe that we must provide programs to students which recognize
the worth of the individual:
The exercise of responsible freedom, a balanced pattern of success
experiences, time for each student to explore and contemplate, a
chance for each student to examine human values, and an opportunity
to examine his/her
cultural heritage.
Each student must be provided with the opportunity to develop to
his/her potential and to take his/her place as a productive citizen.
The student must accept the responsibility for and be expected to
make the most of the opportunities provided for his/her own life,
must be encouraged to make commitments, must be encouraged to maintain
his/her own individuality, and must be instilled with the need to
seek even greater achievement.
We believe it is the purpose of the school:
1. To provide the opportunity for the individual to take on responsibility
and to contribute to the life of the school community.
2. To provide to each student the opportunity to experience success.
3. To encourage a meaningful role for the parents in the education
of their children.
4. To help each student to see the value of the individual.
5. To help prepare each student to lead a productive and meaningful
life.
6. To provide for the individual academic, social, and emotional
needs of each student.
7. To recognize the community as a viable resource in the educational
life of its children.
8. To extend the educational services and facilities of the schools
to meet the needs of the community.
9. To encourage open and ongoing communication between the school
and the home.
The Gorham School District envisions a community of lifelong
learners having high educational and ethical standards, respect
for self, others, and their environment, who are productive citizens
in an evolving global society.
